How do you know where the best place to put a deer stand? What are the characteristics of the best place to put your stand?

Depends on the area that you are hunting. Things to keep in mind are: wind direction, food source, bedding areas, travel routes, how much cover will be provided around your stand. Here in Tennessee, 95% of the time we have a west wind. I try and place my stands on the east side of where I think the deer will be traveling and also around a food source such as oaks, persimmons, or a mineral lick. Hunting near a food source will allow the deer to stop and give you ample time to prepare yourself to make a good shot. Hope this helps.
